Nebraska's inmate van driver program is on hold. The Department of Corrections issued this statement Friday morning:
Effective today, the inmate van driver program has been suspended. A careful and thorough review of the program is underway. Department of Correctional Services Staff will be used to transport inmates affected by this change. Further information will be available when the program review has been completed.
Earlier this week, inmate driver Jeremy Dobbe hit a minivan, killing its driver, Joyce Meeks.
Court records show Dobbe has DUI and reckless driving convictions from 1999 to 2003. He is serving a 5-7 year sentence for drug and other offenses.
